The top 5 Dos and Don’ts of hooking your reader from the first line

With all the competition for your readers’ attention, it’s more important than ever to grab them right off the bat with the first line of your novel. Here are five dos and don’ts:

  1. DON’T overwhelm them with details about your character’s background. While you should know a lot about your characters before you start writing, your readers don’t need to know right away where your character grew up or what they had for breakfast or all about their first love.
